Title: Exciting new Children’s learning & Development Project
Date: 24th October 2007
News Details: Children’s Learning and Development Project: Would you like to be involved?
NICMA are currently developing a Children’s Learning and Development project with funding from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. The project aims to:
• Support registered childminders in meeting children’s learning and development needs in order to achieve enhanced outcomes for children.
• Highlight the educational value of the work of childminders and their ability to meet the Department of Education’s 6 areas of learning in the Curricular Guidance for Pre-school Education.
The project will last for 1 year and we are looking for childminders who would be willing to take part in the research process by reading and reviewing the materials as they are produced and giving feedback as to their relevance and suitability for use in a home based setting. Ultimately we aim to develop a flexible framework which childminders can use in their own settings to help them plan and evaluate their work with young children (0-5).
It is important that childminders have a significant input into the materials and ethos of the framework so that we can use examples of existing good practice which demonstrate the unique benefits of a home based setting and how real life experiences contribute to children’s development and learning.
Unlike the Early Years Foundation Stage framework in England, the NICMA framework will be adopted voluntarily by childminders in Northern Ireland. We would hope, however, that because the framework and materials developed are based on models of existing good practice and relevant to local needs, they would be welcomed by practitioners and adopted widely. This would help to standardize practice and demonstrate to inspection authorities the educational value of home-based settings.
Commitment
Participants would read and review material at home and give feedback by email, post or phone. The groups would meet about once every three months to discuss the overall development of the project.
The final course would be a 30hr. course and by reviewing the material as it is developed you would be deemed to have completed the course and receive a certificate.
