Title: NICMA response to the Daily Mail article of 29 August
Date: 30th August 2007
News Details: NICMA response to the Daily Mail article ‘Thousands at risk from ‘inadequate’ childminders’
30 August 2007
NICMA – the Childminding Association is disappointed to read the Daily Mail article of 29 August 2007 entitled ‘‘Thousands at risk from ‘inadequate’ childminders’ and wholeheartedly supports the response published by the National Childminding Association at www.ncma.org.uk
NICMA wish to clarify that the organisation OFSTED is responsible for standards of daycare in England and Wales only and does not cover Northern Ireland. Childminders in Northern Ireland are registered and inspected by the Health & Social Care Trusts under the legislation Children [NI] Order 1995. The OFSTED report, therefore, does not reflect Childminding in Northern Ireland.
Nevertheless, NICMA are disappointed that the Daily Mail has chosen to undermine Childminding specifically and believes that the article is misleading in its title as the OFSTED report covers other forms of childcare including crèches and nurseries. Childminding in Northern Ireland already suffers from an image problem and NICMA works tirelessly to improve on that mistaken public perception.
