News Details: CROSS BORDER CHILDCARE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
NICMA CELEBRATE SUCCESSFUL CROSS BORDER CHILDCARE TRAINING PROJECT
Early Years Workers from the Childcare Partnerships, County Childcare Committees, Social Services Trusts and NICMA staff will gather at the Broomhill Hotel, Londonderry on Tuesday 12th September, 2006 for the launch of the Cross Border Childcare Training and Development Project Evaluation report.
The Project has provided education, training and support for women in targeted Cross Border areas in order to improve their skills and employability as well as advise and inform them of childcare career opportunities both homebased and facility based.
At the launch, Gail McIntyre, Project Manager, says “As a result of funding from the EU Peace programme, NICMA has delivered a range of childcare related training which has not only improved the quality of childcare to children and families, but has contributed to community regeneration and peace building. The project aimed to encourage women to travel outside their own areas to attend training and provide them with the opportunity for information sharing and collaboration. A large number of women, both sides of the border, have made new friendships and understand each others issues better and at all levels, knowledge and experiences have been shared and understood”.
Jennie Crowley, one of the first beneficiaries recruited onto the project, moved to Enniskillen four years ago. Being a ‘stay at home mum’ gave her time to rethink her future and she decided to pursue a career in childcare. Jennie attended the ‘Introduction to Childcare’ and ‘Child Protection’ courses before enrolling on the NVQ Level 2 Early Years Care and Education programme. Jennie now has a temporary position as an Early Years Worker with a possibility of long term permanent employment. She says “My confidence to educate myself has been boosted. I am also now employed and happy bringing in a decent wage to help with my daughter. I am excited about learning more and more”
