Title: Are You Insured as a Childminder?
Date: 10th August 2006
News Details: A new campaign to highlight the dangers of childminding without adequate Insurance protection has been launched by NICMA - the Childminding Association, the lead agency representing over 2,500 Registered Childminders across Northern Ireland.
As part of the campaign, which is directed at both childminders and parents, NICMA is stressing the need for childminders to hold Public Liability Insurance cover to protect themselves and their businesses.
Suzanne Dunne, NICMA’s Assistant Director says:
“Public liability insurance cover is a vital requirement of running any self employed business, especially in view of the isolation of the job and therefore the potential vulnerability of the Childminder. The legislation supporting childminding does not insist on insurance protection as a mandatory requirement but NICMA feel that it is dangerous practice to childmind without it. Last year, a registered Childminder in Northern Ireland was ordered to pay £60,000 damages to a child, who as a toddler, was bitten in the face by her dog. If this childminder had not been insured, she could have lost her home. This case further highlights the absolute need for a Childminder to protect their business and their livelihood.
We are saying to childminders out there: Don’t put yourself at risk. Make sure you have adequate Insurance cover to protect your business and your livelihood. And to parents: Ensure that your childminder is adequately covered by Insurance”.
NICMA – the Childminding Association offers a comprehensive insurance package to registered Childminders as part of their annual Membership fee. For further information contact NICMA – the Childminding Association, 16-18 Mill Street, Newtownards, BT23 4LU, or telephone 028 91 811015.
