Why your Childminder should have Insurance Protection?

Public liability insurance cover is a vital requirement of running any self employed business, especially in view of the isolation of the job and therefore the potential vulnerability of the Childminder. Although the legislation covering childminding does not require insurance as mandatory, it is suggested under Regulations and Guidance, that it would be good practice for Childminders to take out public liability insurance. In 2005, a registered Childminder in Northern Ireland was ordered to pay £60,000 damages to a child, who as a toddler, was bitten in the face by her dog. This case further highlights the absolute need for a Childminder to protect their business.

As a parent, you need to ensure that your childminder is not only registered to practice as a childminder, but that she holds adequate insurance cover to protect the business.

NICMA – the Childminding Association offers Insurance cover for registered Childminders as part of their annual Membership package. For further information contact NICMA – the Childminding Association, 16-18 Mill Street, Newtownards, BT23 4LU, or telephone 028 91 811015.
